Why Blown-In

Big Comfort Gains, Smaller Price Tag

Blown-in insulation delivers complete, gap-free coverage fast — often at a lower cost than other insulation types.

Lower Energy Bills

By filling gaps and evening out your home’s thermal envelope, blown-in insulation cuts heating and cooling costs and keeps temperatures steady from room to room.

Fills Every Gap

Loose fill flows into attic corners, wall cavities, and floor joists — reaching the tight, irregular spaces that batts and rolls leave exposed.

Fast & Low-Impact

Installed in hours, not days — and without tearing out drywall. It’s the ideal energy upgrade for existing homes, with minimal mess and disruption.

Blown-in insulation being applied with a blowing machine to fill an attic evenly

What Is Blown-In Insulation?

Blown-in insulation — also called loose-fill — is applied with a specialized blowing machine that distributes material evenly for full, consistent coverage. It fills hard-to-reach cavities, prevents air leaks, reduces heat transfer, and dampens noise — all with a high R-value. Because it installs without removing drywall, it’s especially effective for existing homes. Your local Cozy Penguin experts will help you choose the right material and ensure a clean, professional install.

Cellulose

Made from recycled paper treated for fire resistance. Excellent at filling irregular, tight spaces with solid thermal performance and sound control — an eco-friendly, sustainable choice.

Fiberglass

Made from fine glass fibers — lightweight, moisture-resistant, and non-combustible. Resists settling and offers a budget-friendly, widely available option that’s great for attics and open cavities.

Mineral Wool (Rockwool)

Dense and highly durable with excellent fire resistance and soundproofing. A premium option that holds its performance for decades when kept dry and properly installed.

From attics and wall cavities to floors and ceilings, blown-in insulation excels in draft-prone spaces where traditional insulation falls short — delivering even, all-season comfort and lasting energy savings. Explore our other insulation services →

Good to Know

Blown-In Insulation FAQs

How much does blown-in insulation cost?
The cost depends on the material used, your desired R-value, and the total area being insulated. Fiberglass is typically the most affordable option and a popular choice for attics and large spaces; cellulose offers a balance of cost and performance for walls and ceilings; and mineral wool (rockwool) sits at the higher end but adds excellent fire resistance and soundproofing. At The Cozy Penguin, we provide transparent, upfront pricing and help you choose the best option for your home and budget — and we’ll guide you through any rebates or tax credits that lower your total cost.
How long does blown-in insulation last?
It depends on the material and how dry and undisturbed it stays. Fiberglass blown-in insulation can last 80–100 years, though performance drops if it’s compressed or exposed to moisture. Cellulose typically lasts 20–30 years and is more sensitive to moisture. Mineral wool (rockwool) offers roughly 30–80 years, sometimes longer. We install every project correctly to maximize longevity and performance.
Cellulose or fiberglass — which one do I need?
It depends on the space and your goals. Cellulose is eco-friendly, excels at filling tight, irregular areas, and offers strong sound control — great for walls and ceilings. Fiberglass is lightweight, moisture-resistant, non-combustible, resists settling, and is budget-friendly — ideal for attics and open cavities. During your free evaluation, we’ll recommend the best material for each part of your home.
Is blown-in insulation flammable?
Fiberglass and mineral wool (rockwool) are naturally non-combustible, making them excellent around fire-prone areas like kitchens, furnaces, and fireplaces. Cellulose, while made from recycled paper, is treated with fire-retardant additives to enhance its fire resistance and meets safety standards when properly installed. We help you select the right material for your home’s fire-safety needs and building-code requirements.
Could my old insulation contain asbestos?
Modern blown-in insulation products do not contain asbestos. However, in older homes — especially those insulated before the 1990s — there can be a risk of contamination, particularly where vermiculite insulation was used. If you’re unsure about existing material, we can assess it, test for asbestos if needed, and safely remove and replace it with modern, safe, efficient insulation.
